How to Calculate the Perfect Aerial Silk Length for Your Space

Why Silk Length Matters
Choosing the wrong aerial silk length is one of the most common mistakes beginners make. Too short and you won't have enough fabric to perform foundational moves; too long and you'll be tripping over excess material on the ground. Getting this right from the start saves money, frustration, and ensures a safer training experience.
The Basic Formula
The standard starting point for calculating your aerial silk length is:
Rigging Height x 2 + 1 metre (for the rigging point wrap) + 1–2 metres (for ground clearance and footwork)
For example, if your rigging point is 5 metres high you would need approximately: (5 x 2) + 2 = 12 meters of fabric. We recommend rounding it up to the nearest half-metre, if it is 11.5 for exemple.
Accounting for Your Skill Level
Beginners benefit from slightly longer silks because many foundational wraps and climbs use more fabric. As you advance, you may prefer a tighter, more controlled length. A good rule of thumb:
- Beginner: Add an extra 0.5–1 m to your calculated length
- Intermediate/Advanced: Stick closer to the base calculation
Single Point Rigging
For an Aerial Silk you need a single point, your silk hangs from a figure 8 so you have two tails at the bottom.
Low Ceilings and Compact Spaces
Training in a home studio or low-ceiling venue? Silks as short as 6–8 metres can work for floor-based conditioning and low-level wraps. Focus on ground sequences, footwork, and conditioning until you have access to a higher space.
Measuring Your Space
Use a laser measure or a weighted string dropped from your rigging point to get an accurate ceiling height. Measure to the actual attachment point, not just the ceiling, as beams and rigging hardware can add 20–40 cm.
